Notable countries

Singapore leads the ranking with 192 visa-free destinations, ahead of Japan and South Korea at 187. Europe is heavily represented near the top, with Sweden at 186 and Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, and Spain all at 185. At the bottom, Afghanistan has the weakest passport access at 24, followed by Syria at 26 and Iraq at 29. A notable surprise is the United Arab Emirates, which matches Europe’s strongest performers with 186 and ranks joint fourth globally.

Regional trends

Europe has by far the highest continental average at 167, showing consistently strong passport access across the region. North America (133.5), South America (127.8), and Oceania (122.9) form a middle tier, all above the global mean of 107.2. Asia’s average is much lower at 79.73 despite containing the global leader, indicating very wide variation within the continent. Africa has the lowest average at 60.89, and it also includes one of the bottom-ranked countries, Eritrea.

Data source

The data come from the Henley Passport Index 2025 and measure the number of visa-free destinations. Coverage includes 197 countries. Values reflect passport travel access, and the ranking shows large disparities across countries and regions.

Interpretation

Higher values mean a passport gives its holder access to more destinations without needing a visa in advance, while lower values indicate more restricted travel freedom. The spread is wide, from 192 for Singapore to 24 for Afghanistan, compared with a global mean of 107.2. Overall, passport strength is concentrated in Europe and parts of Asia, but regional averages also show that travel access remains highly unequal worldwide.
