Notable countries

China is the clear standout, producing 31,281,600 motor vehicles, far ahead of the United States at 10,562,200 and Japan at 8,234,680. At the bottom, Serbia records just 235 units, followed by Myanmar with 2,711 and Azerbaijan with 6,815. A notable surprise is Australia, which appears among the lowest producers with 7,238 units despite being a high-income economy.

Regional trends

North America has the highest continental average at 5,369,000 units, ahead of Asia at 3,344,000, reflecting the presence of several very large producers in both regions. South America is much lower at 1,027,000, while Europe’s average is 804,800 despite Germany and Spain ranking in the global top 10, suggesting a wide spread within the continent. Africa averages 396,500 and Oceania just 7,238, indicating far smaller production bases overall.

Data source

The data come from OICA 2024 and are measured in units of motor vehicles produced. Coverage includes 46 countries. Comparisons should be read with the limited country coverage in mind, and the very large gap between top and bottom producers shows the distribution is highly uneven.

Interpretation

Higher values indicate a larger domestic motor vehicle manufacturing output, which can reflect stronger industrial capacity and a bigger role in automotive supply chains. Lower values point to smaller or more limited production bases, though they do not by themselves explain market size or economic development. Overall, production is heavily concentrated in a few countries, with China dominating and many countries producing at relatively modest levels.
