Commentary

Notable countries

Finland stands out as the clear leader at 12.5 kg per person per year, with Norway and Sweden tied for second at 10. Europe dominates the top 10, filling nine of the 10 spots, while Canada is the only non-European country in that group at 6.4. At the bottom, a large cluster of countries are tied at just 0.1 kg, mostly in Africa, alongside Kiribati in Oceania and North Korea in Asia.

Regional trends

Europe is far ahead on average at 5.074 kg per person, well above every other continent. South America (1.117), Asia (1.07), and North America (1.061) are grouped fairly closely around the global mean of 1.723 but remain below it. Oceania is slightly lower at 0.9615, while Africa is by far the lowest at 0.2453.

Data source

The figures come from ICO 2022 and are measured in kilograms per person per year. The dataset covers 189 countries. A key caveat is that the ranking reflects only countries with available data.

Interpretation

Because the direction is defined as higher is better, higher values indicate greater coffee consumption per capita, while lower values indicate more limited consumption. The data suggest that coffee drinking is especially entrenched in Europe, whereas consumption is much lower across Africa on average. Overall, the gap between the top countries and the lowest-ranked group is very large, showing that coffee consumption habits vary sharply across regions.
