Tourist Departures
Tourist Departures by country
Commentary
Notable countries
Germany leads the ranking with 107 million tourist departures, followed by the United States at 98.5 million, China at 87.63 million, and the United Kingdom at 86.2 million. Europe is especially prominent in the top 10, with Germany, the United Kingdom, Poland, and France all appearing there. At the bottom, the smallest totals are concentrated in small island states and a few low-mobility countries, including Tuvalu, Nauru, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, and Vanuatu, while Vatican City also appears among the very lowest values.
Regional trends
Europe has the highest continental average at 10.01 million tourist departures, well ahead of North America at 7.682 million and Asia at 6.189 million. South America sits below those three at 3.148 million, while Oceania averages 0.7399 million and Africa has the lowest regional average at 0.4432 million. The regional pattern suggests outbound tourism is much more concentrated in Europe, North America, and parts of Asia than in Africa or Oceania overall.
Data source
The data come from UNWTO 2023/2022 and are measured in millions of tourist departures. Coverage includes 195 countries. A caveat is that the figures reflect departures rather than population size or travel intensity, so very large countries can dominate the ranking.
Interpretation
Higher values mean more residents departing for tourism, which generally points to greater outbound travel volume. Lower values indicate much smaller outbound tourism totals, though this can reflect small population size, geography, or limited travel flows rather than simply weak demand. Overall, the data show a highly uneven distribution: a few large countries account for very high totals, while many countries remain far below the global mean of 5.156 million.
