Tourist Departures per 100 Residents
Tourist Departures per 100 Residents by country
Commentary
Notable countries
Vatican City leads with 226.757 tourist departures per 100 residents, followed closely by Switzerland and Luxembourg, both above 215. Europe dominates the top 10, while Bahrain is the only Asian country in that group. At the other end, Angola records just 0.0079 trips per 100 people, with Chad, Niger, North Korea, and Ethiopia also near zero. A notable surprise is Albania’s presence in the top 10 alongside much larger and wealthier European countries.
Regional trends
Europe stands far above every other region, averaging 67.82 trips per 100 residents, well ahead of Asia at 24.22 and North America at 21.7. South America and Oceania are lower, at 14.62 and 13.96 respectively, while Africa is by far the lowest at 3.649. This regional spread shows a strong concentration of outbound tourism in Europe and much weaker participation across Africa.
Data source
The data come from UNWTO 2023 / WB 2024 and are measured in trips per 100 people. Coverage includes 195 countries. As a caveat, this is a departures rate rather than a raw traveler count, so small countries can post very high values.
Interpretation
Higher values mean residents make more outbound tourist trips relative to population size, indicating stronger participation in international leisure travel. Lower values point to very limited outbound tourism activity. With a global mean of 27.4 and a large spread, the data suggest major inequalities in access to international travel. Overall, outbound tourism is common in some regions, especially Europe, but remains rare in many poorer or more constrained countries.
