Import Per Capita
Import Per Capita by country
Commentary
Notable countries
Luxembourg stands far above all others at 251,539 USD per person, with Singapore and Ireland also posting exceptionally high import-per-capita levels above 100,000. Europe dominates the top 10, while the United Arab Emirates is the only non-European economy there besides Singapore. At the other end, Burundi has the lowest value at 102.01 USD per person, and the bottom 10 is heavily concentrated in Africa, with Papua New Guinea and Afghanistan also among the lowest.
Regional trends
Europe has by far the highest continental average at 29,110 USD per person, well ahead of every other region. Asia ranks second at 8,577, followed by North America at 6,735 and Oceania at 5,951, while South America is lower at 3,322. Africa has the lowest average at 1,385, which matches its strong presence among the bottom-ranked countries.
Data source
The data come from the World Bank and are measured in USD per person. Coverage includes 193 countries. Values are national per-capita imports, so they can be strongly influenced by very small, highly open economies, which helps explain some extreme outliers.
Interpretation
Higher import per capita indicates that, on average, a country imports more goods and services relative to its population, which in this dataset is treated as better. Very high values often point to wealthy, trade-intensive, or small economies, while very low values may reflect limited purchasing power, weaker trade integration, or economic constraints. Overall, the data show large global disparities, with a few extreme high-income trading hubs pulling far away from the rest.
